I’m currently working on a documentary project photographing the Appleby Fair an annual gathering of Romani Gypsies from all over the country and Ireland. I’m interested is documenting their traditional ways of horse trading at the Fair, also the amazingly colourful painted wagons and gaining an understanding of the problems faced trying to maintaining their culture and traditions.
I explore their journey, the stopping off camps and excitement of arriving at Appleby. Generally regarded with deep suspicion but I have found so many kind, entertaining and gentle folk, a lot of whom live and work in the countryside where they still work with horses and sheep. I do think every sector of society there are good and bad and the gypsy community are no different.
